Issue 3: Catherine McGuire

Gorge Amphitheater; George, Washington, Sept. 2009

Unobtanium

If you bang something together
fast enough, something new happens.
That’s what they say, and despite
the breakdowns, the leaks that poison
some chance areas, we are
going faster all the time. Ad astra! Like startled birds
banging against clear panes,
we don’t see glass walls or ceilings –
we dart and veer, hurling through
narrow lives at supersonic speeds.
Hey! This is the good life! we gasp,
when there’s time. Excited particles,
global experiment – monitored,
vectored, we Tron through our jobs and fun
and if sometimes we crash, well –
death is a new state.
